MEN'S WATCHES (3) Give it away, "Give it away now." [Red Hot Chili Peppers]

"Give it away now." Red Hot Chili Peppers

This installment no3 on the topic of watches, because today I had to polish and reassemble a watch (over the course of about 2 hours) that I am giving away this week to a young man who is really doing a great job in his life.

Giving away a favorite watch to a young man who (despite no support) is actually doing a great job of stepping up and being a good man:

  1. Men used to have a tradition of honoring and supporting each other; now what we see is constant competition and “oneupmanship.” Robert Moore wisely said, “If you are a young man who is not being mentored and honored by an older man, you are being hurt.” See Bly’s Iron John, Sibling Society, and Moore and Gillette’s KING WARRIOR MAGICIAN LOVER.

  2. When giving away a used watch with sentimental value (it should hurt a little), make sure it is clean, serviced, and in good overall condition, including the band, which can have patina but not grease and grime.

  3. Don’t expect a young man to act and think like an older man with 50+ years of experience, especially if he never had a father, etc. You should expect them to be distant and timid when it comes to what might be their first experience having a respectful relationship with a real adult man—they may have never seen one before. Expect them to be uncomfortable and talk about superficial topics in order to avoid legitimate intimacy and meaning. Expect to feel like you’re wasting time while you are giving them space to be comfortable in what might be their first legitimate adult interaction.

  4. Sometimes the purpose of giving a gift is to show someone what is possible for their life even if it is better than anything they had before. If it is “uncomfortably good” at first, then they will grow upward to eventually be comfortable with it.

  5. Give the gift cleanly without any “emotional residue” (concept from Rick Jarrow in CREATING THE WORK YOU LOVE) and then forget about it. Don’t ask about it and don’t expect visitation rights, let alone use rights.

  6. Don’t give a gift and then act like a fool because now you’ve contaminated the gift and your gift might end up in the trash or given away to a taxi driver.

Notes from today’s video on MEN’S WATCHES (part1):

  1. Style: 1) dress, 2) casual, 3) sport, 4) mud—beyond that, give them away to inspire a man in your life

  2. Color

  3. Movement—always automatic, but then you can get more detailed

  4. Size—I like a 47mm but currently wear a 42

  5. Complications: Date, Day—don’t be neurotic

  6. Sapphire crystal

  7. Ceramic bezel—boss! but steel is OK

  8. Safety clasp—better than a loose clasp that leaves your watch on the floor

  9. The four (4) videos that I have seen recently from external (YouTube) sources are provided below for supporting subscribers: the first 2 videos on the list are excellent “must-watch” watch videos

  10. I included the video on vitamin D for the sake of the OG context—this is a purely GenX flex but hey there you have it!
