Hi Dr. Vasquez. I’m a third-year undergraduate chemistry major who is determined to pursue a PhD in pharmacology, as well as an MBA in marketing.

Would you say that academia breeds students to be soulless drones who are just good at one aspect of life (i.e. research, corporate practice)?

For the most part yes, to be sure: academia breeds students to be soulless drones who are just good at one aspect of life. Of course some schools and programs are better than others and have a more humanistic orientation. But the corruption and essential collapse of academia internationally including the United States is that most schools really just focus on profit and administrative power and the so-called professors are simply part-time workers who fill a slot and try to get in and out as fast as possible. True academic rigor requires full-time professors who have a commitmentTo producing quality students and maintaining a quality program. Again, most professors these days are just part time “adjunct faculty” and they don’t even have offices or desks but just float in and out stocking pencils in their cargo pants. The amount of faculty development and support these days is essentially zero. All schools are going to print pretty brochures that talk about academic rigor and “preparing our students for whatever the future brings” but it’s all just bullshit rhetoric because what they really need is cash flow and they will readily sacrifice quality in order to keep somebody paying their tuition. If I had to choose a school based simply on the school and not the city or other logistics then I would look for a school that has full-time salaried faculty and not simply “adjunct professors” who are putting together their teaching plans at Starbucks.

Part two: schools of course will argue that they don’t have the responsibility to develop any moral character and their students but they are simply to provide an education on a specific topic. This is an ultimately stupid attitude because precisely institutions have the responsibility to carry morals and ethics into the community especially when we’re talking about educating young students. These days no one takes responsibility for carrying the moral and ethical load of the community and this is why we have a community which has essentially collapsed in every aspect. This is what I discussed in the video that I did on the collapse of the four pillars of society.
