Health Homework (16) Use salsas-dressings to flavor/lubricate vegetables that you'd otherwise not eat
I refuse to eat plain celery, but I’m also not going to use a chemical bomb like ranch dressing or green goddess to ruin the benefit
Except for hummus, I’d probably never willingly go to the kitchen and eat a full stalk of celery.
Likewise, except for oil and vinegar, the vast majority of salads would never be eaten—probably never even considered.
We have to lubricate our resistances, when our resistances block us from achieving our goals. (You can quote me on that; I certainly will.)
Personally, I find carrots sweet enough to eat them plain, straight out of the bag, and for a while I was somewhat famous/notorious for carrying around 5-pound bags of carrots with me virtually everywhere I went, including conference presentations, clinic visits, hospital shifts and all driving in between—my old cars were constantly decorated by the discarded carrot tops.

Morning coffee helps me exercise.
Mid-day hummus helps me eat more vegetables.
A glass of wine at night reminds me to take antioxidants, magnesium and melatonin.
Find what works for you, and then work it so that you get what you want.
Just make sure that the facilitation/lubrication does not overpower the goal. Like I said above, “I refuse to eat plain celery, but I’m also not going to use a chemical bomb like ranch dressing or green goddess to ruin the benefit.”
Need coffee to exercise?—great, but don’t drink a 400-calorie coffee for a 200-calorie workout.
Dressing-up vegetables is great, but not with a chemical bomb of fake ranch dressing or green goddess from a Dow Jones chemical laboratory. You might be better off eating nothing, as is usually the case.
A glass of wine at night to down your melatonin and antioxidants is probably a great idea, but not if the glass becomes a bottle … and you end up doing drunk stunts like sending break-up texts to someone you’re not even dating, or someone that you wish you were already dating, messages that start with “hey I need to clear something up” to your your boss, or your parents, etc.
Find what works for you, and then work it so that you get what you want. Make sure that you keep it healthy.
The secret to eating sprouted lentils (which is a fascinating process to observe) is in the decoration, either a simple oil and vinegar (my default) or a more glorious adornment with chopped apples, nuts, strawberries, blueberries…
