If you can make a pocket, you can make a bag, then you could make a bigger bag and by then you could easily make a vest and after you’ve made a better vest, you could make a shirt/jacket. Keep going and next thing you know you’ll be making gifts and getting offers from venture capitalists.
Last night, I was looking at a funky misshapen piece of scrap leather and decided that its only useful fate was that of becoming a rather limited leather pocket—one that would at best fit a passport or small pipe. I’ve never made such a thing, especially with stitching included, but today I did that and you’re looking at the results in the photos above and below. The whole experiment took 75 minutes.





I happen to like rustic (appropriate to the country, plain and sturdy) and functional leather goods, so it works for me.
Obviously, if I can make a pocket, then I could make a bag with a strap, and then I could make a better bag, and by then I’d probably be ready to make my own leather vest, which would give me quite a bit of pleasure if I wanted to create such a thing. By then, the next thing you know I might be making saddles and opening a location in downtown New York to sell my wares.
I bought this leather card holder at the local artist market in Jacksonville, Florida in 2022 and I absolutely love it. After one or two tries, anybody could make something like this. You can see the outline of my miniature beard comb in the patina. Next time I need one of these, I’ll just make it myself.
