MANUFACTURING CONSENT: documentary movie that explains the capture of "mainstream media" by government and corporate gamers for power and profit
Artists compile reality into images that explain reality back to us
During my teens and early 20s growing up in Houston Texas, I was very fortunate to have some “internationally awake” friends whose parents had escaped Pinochet’s dictatorship; these friends helped me gain some political insight through conversations and also a casual movie night when we saw Manufacturing Consent at the 1939 art deco River Oaks Theater. Here, I am outlining and providing access to the 1992 documentary film by Canadian filmmakers Mark Achbar and Peter Wintonick based on the 1988 book by Noam Chomsky and Edward S. Herman.

Quick Introduction: 5 Filters of the Mass Media Machine
Short summary narrated by Amy Goodman; link: youtu.be/34LGPIXvU5M
Their goal is profit, not truth, and certainly not your empowerment: Media ownership by large corporations/conglomerates with the singular goal of profit
The news is tailored to the desires of the corporate advertisers: Advertisers pay for a cultivated/groomed audience so the story in the news is an extension of the advertiser's message
Incestuous relationships between politicians, regulators, media and corporations ensures that no-one is ever held to account.
Censorship, discrediting, diverting, and character assassination against anyone who disagrees with the narrative
Creating a common enemy, a target of hate, the scapegoat, a distraction: Most commonly (in the USA), the scapegoat is Communism or immigrants.
