Self-Paced Learning: Antiviral Nutrition Protocol Structure, Science, Application
Here you can learn about viral infections: how they occur, what they do, and how to control them with diet, lifestyle, medicines and nutritional supplementation
We all need a better understanding of viral infections, especially now
Whether we are doctors or patients, we all have an interest in viral infections because of their prevalence in the population and also their clinical consequences. However, my experience/observation is that most people don’t understand the basic “structure of a viral infection” and therefore they have difficulty understanding and managing these common occurrences.
Did you know that some virus infections “come and go” which means they can be “cleared” or are otherwise temporary, whereas other viral infections especially the herpes infections are permanent, even though their manifestations may be transient?
Did you know that 50% of the world population has been infected with herpes simplex virus type I, while 20% of the world population has been infected with herpes simplex virus type II?
Did you know that at least 50% of adults have been infected with cytomegalovirus (CMV)? Usually these infections are latent/silent until the person is immunosuppressed and the virus is liberated/derestrained, such as in the case of persons with AIDS. The case of CMV provides us a clear example that the virus is actually less important than is the immune surveillance and metabolic suppression of viral replication.
Given that most adults have been infected with disease-causing viruses, how can we control the expression of these viruses in order to minimize the adverse effects of infection?
Did you know that several nutrients have been proven scientifically to suppress viral replication as well as viral mutation?
Most of us get a generalized overview of viral infections when we study undergraduate Biology. However, even at the graduate/doctorate level, the training in truly understanding viral infections is very sparse, basic and occasionally nonexistent. Many doctors graduate from medical/professional training without a competent and effective understanding of viral infections:
In chiropractic college, we studied viral infections in specific courses such as Basic Microbiology, Clinical Microbiology, Public Health, and a series of courses in Pathology; also some specific mention in our course on Clinical Nutrition, wherein we learned to treat some common viral infections such as herpes virus with nutritional supplements.
In naturopathic medical school, we studied viral infections in Clinical Microbiology, Immunology, and also our courses in Clinical Nutrition and our extensive series of courses in Botanical Medicines. As far as formal education goes, my training in naturopathic medicine was the best I received for understanding immunology and viral microbiology; by the time we graduated after four years of study, I think all of us could effectively diagnose and manage a wide range of viral infections using drugs, nutrients, and botanical medicines.
In our particular medical school, we only had a very brief and superficial mention of viral infections when we studied Microbiology/Pathology within a course titled Mechanisms of Diseases, which we had in two consecutive parts, both of which were fast-paced, detailed, and brutal; we had to read an entire microbiology textbook within 10 days. I honestly don’t think we learned anything of practical value except “buzzwords” and “word associations” (only useful for passing exams and sounding [without being] knowledgeable) with maybe how to throw some antiviral drugs at certain situations; I thought our medical training in Immunology and Microbiology was appalling, especially since we as “medical doctors” were supposed to be experts in the use of antibiotics, vaccines, and other drugs.
Based on my rather extensive training/teaching on this topic as a student, later as a professor, and also as an international postgraduate lecturer, I am quite convinced that the vast majority of patients and professionals don’t really understand the basic common structure of viral infections.
What is the first step in a viral infection, and how can this step be controlled/modulated via nutritional supplementation and diet?
What is the second step in a viral infection, and how can this step be controlled/modulated via nutritional supplementation and diet?
What is the third step in a clinical viral infection, and how can this step be controlled/modulated via nutritional supplementation and diet?
Fourth and finally, how can we address the clinical consequences of a viral infection to facilitate recuperation and to avoid complications such as ongoing fatigue, inflammation, and autoimmune/inflammatory disorders?
Without this understanding, people won’t have a comprehensive overview that allows them to understand, prevent and treat these viral infections as they occur in real life. I had published my first antiviral protocol in a textbook in 2009, but in 2014 I completely revised and restructured this material into what I later published as a small book titled Antiviral Nutrition, a book that received positive reviews as an Amazon bestseller until the book was arbitrarily and capriciously banned in 2020, exactly at the time when this book was needed the most to address the international coronavirus pandemic. Obviously the book was banned for political reasons and not for faults within the material; the book was strictly scientific and in no way could have ever been interpreted as being “anti-vaccine” because I specifically stated that “nothing in this book is to be interpreted as being against vaccines” and the book was strictly referenced to peer-reviewed biomedical research and especially clinical trials showing safety and effectiveness in humans.
Outline of this self-paced modular course in Antiviral Nutrition
So today, I will begin outlining and providing materials for this self-paced modular course in antiviral strategies and immune nutrition. I suppose I’ll start with the assumption that I will have at least 10 components, and we can reasonably expect that the materials will grow as we gain experience and as we keep pace with new developments. The first four components of this program will be very “linear” but thereafter we will need to learn to work with the material from different perspectives (including PBL—problem-based learning) in an asynchronous manner in order to gain mastery over the topic. The materials will start with videos and articles and will eventually segue into discussion forums for professionals and also for the general public. The first components are as follows:
VIDEO: Antiviral protocol overview and reintroduction (provided below on this page)
VIDEO: Potential risks and adverse effects of the antiviral nutrition protocol (provided below on this page)
VIDEO: Antiviral nutrition protocol for the so-called novel 2019 coronavirus (now available; linked below)
…additional materials will include… NEW BOOK CHAPTER: I have a new book chapter of original never-before-seen material that provides a completely new way of explaining and understanding viral infections
Interview: Cavin Ballaster interviews Dr Alex Vasquez at the start of the coronavirus pandemic in early 2020; Dr Vasquez discusses various aspects of viral infections, their transmission, treatment; Dr Vasquez also discusses the banning of his book from Amazon despite 6 years of 5-star reviews and “number 1 bestseller” status in its category; the edited PDF transcript provides additional clarity, images, and highlights

11. VIDEO: Nutritional Neglect: Part 2—Vitamin D
12. THREE SHORT VIDEOS: Nutritional Neglect: Part 3—Selenium. Three videos discuss the nutritional neglect of selenium.
MINERAL: Selenium is a mineral, commonly deficient in the soil, leading to deficiencies in plants, animals and humans.
NUTRIENT: Selenium is remarkably safe* and is commonly included in nutritional supplements at 200 micrograms (mcg) per daily dose for adults.
EFFECTIVE: Selenium is proven to support and enhance immune function.
PROTECTIVE: Selenium functions as an antioxidant by supporting the function of the enzyme glutathione reductase.
ANTIMUTAGENIC: Selenium reduces free-radical damage, thereby protecting the human host while also reducing the rate/severity of viral mutations.
ANTIVIRAL: The combination of 1) barrier enhancement/maintenance, 2) anti-replicative, 3) immune enhancement, and 4) systemic benefits allows us to consider selenium as a complete 4-component antiviral intervention.
AVAILABLE/INEXPENSIVE: Selenium is affordable/inexpensive and widely available.
Governments should have addressed the pandemic of selenium deficiency years ago, especially since selenium is proven to provide anti-viral benefits and to reduce viral mutation (proven among millions).
The two observations that 1) none of the governments and major health organizations are recommending and providing supplementation with vitamin D (60-90% of people are deficient), zinc (30% of the worldwide population is deficient, and selenium (15% of people are deficient) while 2) these same organizations state that alcohol, tobacco, and ultra-processed fake foods such as pastries and junk food are “essential” allows us to reach an obvious conclusion: governments and medical organizations are not educating people to be healthy and empowered and to prevent illness but are actually working to achieve the reverse of this: to keep people ignorant, dependent, weak and ill.
13. VIDEO: Antiviral Use of Cysteine, Acetyl-Cysteine, NAC
Cysteine is an amino acid that provides a long list (>18) of health benefits; see video for details!
Dietary proteins are made of various combinations of amino acids, one of which is the amino acid cysteine. By using nutritional supplements of cysteine in the stabilized form of acetyl-cysteine, also called N-acetyl-cysteine or NAC, we can gain clinically important benefits including reductions in inflammation and oxidative (free radical) stress, alleviation of depression and other psychiatric problems, as well as enhancement of immune function and inhibition of viral replication, leading to reduced frequency and severity of viral infections.
Minor note: You will commonly see Cysteine described as “L-cysteine” which refers to the three-dimensional “direction” or “handedness” of the molecule. Since all amino acids in human nutrition are of the L or levo (“left-handed”) configuration, this distinction is a bit redundant while also serving to differentiate the form as not being of the D or dextro (“right-handed”) configuration.

We use the amino acid Cysteine in the form of NAC/acetylcysteine for antioxidant, antiinflammatory, antidepressant, immunosupportive, and antiviral actions, all of which are well-proven in human clinical practice
