The movie is staged in London in some dystopian future controlled by a fascist dictatorship with connection to the pharmaceutical industry. As the story goes, a manufactured virus was unleashed upon the population, and government power figures connected to the pharmaceutical industry became even more rich and powerful when they provided a pharmaceutical solution to the bioweapon which they had released upon their citizens. The entire continent lives in a perpetual state of quarantine, lockdown, surveillance, and propaganda. Public television/media is completely controlled by the government to spew lies and propaganda under the guise of “news” and entertainment. The people know it’s all bullshit, but they mostly feel powerless to change anything until someone provides leadership and the guiding light out of their oppression.
The movie is nearly perfect in its content, cinematography and execution. It’s smart, and the dialogue is intelligent, and therefore occasionally quite subtle. Don’t be surprised if you gain more from the movie each time you watch it. I’ve personally watched it perhaps 100 times. It’s one of the movies that helped me survive the stress and gaslighting of medical school, because it provided a model of intelligent resistance and strategic success.

The fact that most people have never heard of this movie could be evidence of its suppression, and therefore its importance. The fact that the Wikipedia page detailing this movie is a smear campaign against independent thinking is likewise evidence of its importance; Wikipedia describes the humanity-saving hero of the film as “an anarchist terrorist” and while describing the murderous fascist dictator as “the elected leader.” Think about it. Understand.
