SUMMARY: We use the amino acid Cysteine in the form of NAC/acetylcysteine for antioxidant, antiinflammatory, antidepressant, immunosupportive, and antiviral actions, all of which are well-proven in human clinical practice
Cysteine is an amino acid that provides a long list (>18) of health benefits; see video for details!
Dietary proteins are made of various combinations of amino acids, one of which is the amino acid cysteine. By using nutritional supplements of cysteine in the stabilized form of acetyl-cysteine, also called N-acetyl-cysteine or NAC, we can gain clinically important benefits including reductions in inflammation and oxidative (free radical) stress, alleviation of depression and other psychiatric problems, as well as enhancement of immune function and inhibition of viral replication, leading to reduced frequency and severity of viral infections.
Minor note: You will commonly see Cysteine described as “L-cysteine” which refers to the three-dimensional “direction” or “handedness” of the molecule. Since all amino acids in human nutrition are of the L or levo (“left-handed”) configuration, this distinction is a bit redundant while also serving to differentiate the form as not being of the D or dextro (“right-handed”) configuration.
