I have watched up to a dozen or so videos specific to art nouveau, but the video I watched today and embedded below titled “Art Nouveau without borders” was for me so intense that I had to divide my viewing into at least three sessions. It is a masterpiece; the images below this paragraph are screenshots from the video.
Art Nouveau is commonly described as a style and movement in architecture and design that:
originated in Vienna Austria (although some argue that it started in Belgium),
popularized in Paris, specifically at the 1900 Paris International Exposition,
lasted only 20 years from 1890-1910
celebrated humanity (especially women), nature, and asymmetry.

VIDEO1: Here is an *academic* introduction to the basic concepts and terms used in ART NOUVEAU.
Personally, I am much more drawn to the curvilinear style, as the straight/rectilinear form occurs to me as 1) easy to confuse with ART DECO, and 2) easily the opposite of what is trying to be achieved with the curvilinear style—see my concluding remarks below.

Notice that the beautiful building in the (3 of 6) photos below is a water tower—what would life be like if so much of our cities and urban infrastructure were so amazingly elegant and beautiful.
That’s all great, but… All art and architecture is representation…
All art and architecture is representation; if we love a particular style, we love it for what it communicates and implies. As such, the art and architecture are a representation and reflection of our own internal values.
For me: the importance of Art Nouveau is in its representation, prerequisite, and sustenance of a society that values craftsmanship, creativity, individuality, excellence, discipline, mentoring...
The implication of Art Nouveau is that asymmetry—imperfection—is to be accepted, integrated, and celebrated.
Excellence matters, and it requires peer input, time, conversation, mentoring, and a social environment of connection and communication.
Human-generated manual skills matter; art nouveau is unique in its requirement that creativity and asymmetry cannot be produced by industrial machines.
As such, art nouveau implies (or at least is compatible with) a sustainable, connected, and vibrant society with a robust “middle class” of workers that are well paid, well trained, and well respected.
