My favorite Music (1, Fun+Funky) I saw INFECTIOUS GROOVES at FITZGERALD'S in Houston, 1991
I just (re)bought their self-titled album INFECTIOUS GROOVES again this past week.* It is the epitome of FUN-funk-PUNK-metal with a heavy emphasis on bass riffs and fun lyrics
“Genius often expresses itself in ease and simplicity of presentation.” Houston Press 1991
34 years later from my undergraduate years, I still remember reading in HOUSTON PRESS their 1991 article promoting the new group INFECTIOUS GROOVES scheduled to play at Houston’s famous music hall FITZGERALD'S in 1991. The HOUSTON PRESS article was remarkably well written—so much so that I still think about it and wish I could find the original—but alas the HOUSTON PRESS archives only go back to 1993.
Fitzgerald's was one of the oldest and widely recognized live music venues in the Greater Houston area. The club had been at the top of the live music scene in Houston since it opened in 1977. Fitzgerald's is commonly referred to as "Fitz.” Fitzgerald’s closed and the 100-year-old building was demolished in 2019.1
I did indeed attend the concert at FITZGERALD'S in 1991, and I just (re)bought their self-titled album INFECTIOUS GROOVES again this past week.* It is the epitome of FUN-funk-PUNK-metal with a heavy emphasis on bass riffs and fun lyrics.
Most of the songs are about them as a new band, but also with a story of some character who appears to be a green lizard as you can see on the cover of the album. Like I said, it is all in fun—this high-level fun, not high-level baroque or classic.
